Social Security

What We Stand For

Better social security:
We call for the following: The full abolition of sanctions, the two child limit and the bedroom tax. All social security payments to be made from day one of people successfully applying for them no more weeks long waiting. For social security payments and the minimum wage to be triple locked like pensions. The minimum wage, pensions and social security payments to be raised to the point where food banks are no longer needed at all. For job centres to become places where people can actually get help finding a good job and free training.

Help and advice:
We call for the establishment of full time district advice centres across Stockport and Britain to help people apply for the social security they are entitled to, as well as help with a variety of other matters.

End privatisation:
We call for the end of all privatisation in the social security system. The social security system should be democratically run by workers and claimants.

Trial Universal Basic Income (UBI) in Stockport:
A report for the Local Government Association in 2022 mentions there are around 35,000 people in Stockport living in deprivation. To alleviate this deprivation and test the principle of UBI, we call for a 5 year trial, funded by the government of UBI in Stockport where all people including homeless people, or their parents/guardians in the case of children, receive enough money to lift them out of poverty.
