We have recently seen that leaflets have been distributed in Stockport during the current local elections, which contain text that denies and denigrates the existence of parts of the LGBTQIA+ community, namely Transgender people and Non-Binary people.
We oppose this and wholeheartedly stand with Stockport’s LGBTQIA+ community and abhor any attempt to ignore and erase part of that community’s existence.
We also note that same leaflet despite purporting to be in defence of women contains no actual content on pushing forward rights, programmes and services which would actually benefit women in Stockport. To us this is clearly an attempt to use the local elections to push forward an anti-transgender and anti-nonbinary platform.
We call on all other parties in Stockport to join us in condemning this leaflet and any and all attempts to use elections in Stockport to oppose the rights, living conditions and existence of Stockport’s LGBTQIA+ community.
We will not be displaying the leaflet or repeating its claims here or naming the candidate or party as we feel this will just give them and their views more publicity.
